The Origins of Savannah

Savannah, Georgia - founded way back in 1733 - has been a beloved American city ever since. From its earliest days as Colonial settlement to its more recent role as a bustling tourist destination, it has been an increasingly vibrant spot, one that I've had the pleasure of visiting many times. 🏙️ In 1733, with the permission of then-King George II of England, James Oglethorpe, the British Colonial governor, founded Savanah as the first Provincial town of colonial America. Oglethorpe wanted to create a buffer from Spanish territory in Florida to use as a restricted tradeoutlet and military defense. Savannah was strategically situated between two mines and two rivers, allowing for easier transportation of goods and services. This was a pivotal moment in history of the U.S.A., as it established a firm foothold in the southeastern quadrant of what became the nation. 🏛️ So there you have it, the historical foundation of this amazing city is ancient history by now, and yet a part of her soul is intact and burning brighter than ever before.👨🏼‍🎤
